Habitat compensation in nature-like fishways

STINA GUSTAFSSON H aitat om pesation in nare-like fshw ys The construction of nature-like fishways has become an increasingly common measure to restore longitudinal connectivity in streams, but these fishways also have the potential to compensate for habitat degradation and loss associated with hydropower. The habitat potential of fishways has largely been overlooked, and therefore the aim of this dissertation was to examine the potential of naturelike fishways for habitat compensation, with special focus on the effect of added habitat heterogeneity.

Determining the best location for a nature-like fishway in Gavle River, Sweden
The construction of dams and hydro-power stations are some of the most common anthropogenic changes of watercourses and rivers. While being important to humans and society by providing electricity, these obstructions of watercourses can have severe consequences for the aquatic ecosystems. One consequence is that dams often hinder the important movement of migrating fish species between habitats...
متن کاملDesign and Evaluation of Nature-Like Fishways for Passage of Northeastern Diadromous Fishes Final Report
Several nature-like fishway designs have been constructed in the northeastern US, but none of these fishways have been quantitatively evaluated for passage of northeastern diadromous species. This report summarizes data on passage performance from two studies of nature-like fishway designs for passage of river herring in the field (Town Brook, Plymouth, Massachusetts, and East River, Guilford, ...
متن کاملMismatch between fishway operation and timing of fish movements: a risk for cascading effects in partial migration systems
Habitat fragmentation is a growing problem worldwide. Particularly in river systems, numerous dams and weirs hamper the movement of a wide variety of species. With the aim to preserve connectivity for fish, many barriers in river systems are equipped with fishways (also called fish passages or fish ladders). However, few fishways provide full connectivity. Here we hypothesized that restricted s...

Hydroelectric dams and weirs often represent barriers for a wide range of migratory fish species and may cause population fragmentation (Jungwirth 1998; Lucas & Baras 2001; Heggenes & Roed 2006). In general, the migratory system of diadromous fishes requires both upand downstream migrations during the life cycle. Anadromous and potamodromous fish, such as Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., brown ...

This article studies the nature of blood money (Dia) in Islamic jurisprudence. There is a question whether blood money (Dia) is a punishment or it is solely compensation. There are four different views in this respect. Some believes it is only a punishment, others say it is only compensation. Some others say that we should divide it into two various parts; thus it is sometimes punishment and so...
